Default Making the move to Vegas?

I live in orlando, hate it here only moved here because my girlfriend always wanted to live here for some odd reason (we moved from maryland). Well as I get serious about poker I've been thinking about making a move to Vegas to live.

Her and I are about to break up (go figure) and I have a great weekly game here with great players and tournaments. I have the tournaments at the Hard rock casino here, also the sun cruz casino ship. But I hate the hurricanes, the rain, the humidit and the HORRIBLE drivers not to mention the people here are weird ( I have no friends here)

I was wondering if someone could give me some insight to living in vegas? Or if you have thought about it where if any did you get your online research about the life out there? I am 27, I like having a nice social life going out to clubs occassionally but really want to move out there to step up my poker game.

The company I work for here has an office out there where my supervisor/friend just transferrred to and she said she could get me a position out there with our company if I wanted.

Any comments would be appreciated.

OK, let the Florida bashing begin. Other than the town I live in and Jacksonville, I would have to say that Orlando is the only other good place. Most people think of Orlando for the theme parks, but I think Orlando is a very neat city. So, moving out of Florida would generally not be a bad idea. However, Orlando is a very cool city IMO. Also, another reason to stick in Florida is because of the property value. The housing boom is crazy from the Vero area down. This might now be for you, but I am just saying that the money is open for the taking down here. However, it seems like you have good job security and a position would be ready for you if you go out to Vegas. Obviously, you will have much greater opportunities for poker in Vegas. In Florida, the players are God awful, but ver low limits are offered due to restrictions. As far as comparing the two, Vegas is a probably a more expensive city than Orlando. However, you won't have to worry about the hurricanes and humidity. Yes, Florida people are very weird. So, in conclusion, it is all a matter of preference. I could never live in Vegas, but if it is right for you I say go for it. Remember that you must have good money management. Vegas is a city where you will meet some great people and will have a good social life. Just don't let it get to your head.

Well!!!
I cant see what can hold you in Florida.
Not sure if Vegas is the place for you, but definately, Orlando is'nt!!!

Also, Vegas is a huge tourists trap where you'll find a lot of fishes and ,on the other side, you'll find a lot of very solid players to watch helping you to improuve considering you take the game siriouly.

Honestly, I would make the CALL in a heart beat.
I mean, you have a garanteed job there!!!

I'm Buisiness Developement Manager in a technology firm (have lack of motivation for a few months now), and I'm starting to think about quitting and find a less demanding job and slowly try to turn pro. Where I would live!?!? Dont know, but Vegas would be a great place I think.

I'm a little bit dreaming right now, beacause my bankroll is definately not big enough to play for living, and despite the fact I have a realy bad motivation problem, my job is still good money. Not mentioning I would lost 200K options for 2006 and 2007. (100K each year) Not worth a lot for now, but could definately become big enough to turn pro and do it in a beter mood.

Woooo, I'm supposed to talk about you... not me... All this shit just to say I would pack up my things and try to be there quik enough to attend the WSOP final table live!!! :good:

Dam... your post really hit me right to heart!!! I realize even more I have no more fun doing what I do... I feel all mixed up...

After all, its not a prison, if you dont like it go back to maryland...

KJ

A lot of people I know have moved out of So-Cal (they were sick of paying $1200 for a one bedroom) to Henderson, right outside of Las Vegas. The real estate prices are still fairly cheap, but they're going to take off within the next few years as more people realize Vegas is a cool city to live in.

Being from LA and going out there all the time, I've really noticed a change in the nightlife in Vegas over the last 5-10 years. It's gotten much better and much more upscale - and of course, more expensive. You certainly won't be bored with the nightlife, though...

The weather is definitely a lot shittier, but being from So-Cal, I've got it pretty good so I have no frame of reference as to other parts of the country.

Let me start by saying I was born and raised in the Orlando area. I was born and spent the first 13 yrs of my life in Altamonte Springs (Forest City) and moved out to Ocoee/Winter Garden after that. I have lived in Orlando off and on for the last 14 years (Since I turned 18 and moved away). I have always moved back to orlando because I always forgot why I left in the first place.

Orlando (for locals) is the worst place to live, and I've lived in a lot of other places. That being said, FL has a lot of benifits not found in other places that had better be taken into account before somebody moves away. Taxes are the biggest thing. In Central FL, you get away from a lot of the taxes that plague other places because of the sheer amount of tourists they can tax to relieve the pressure on the locals. Cost of living (not land) is the same, if not lower. I have no Idea about vegas because I've never been there.

That being said, I would move (if in your position) in a heart beat. Orlando doesn't have a lot to offer non-locals. If you have friends or family, it's still a great place to leave because you can always come back to visit.

Hey if you make the move good luck to you.
That city is a hard place to live.
I lived in Vegas for 2 years but got burned out fast, i would Play cards during the day usally for 8 or 9 hours and then go out and party my ass off. I was 21 and wanting to live and party like a rock star and still try to make a living playing cards. But if you can control the night life part of it and keep focused on improving your game you can make it. With you having a job out there that is a big plus, you will always have something to fall back on if you happen to go on a cold strecth.

But hey again if you make the move good luck to you!
