You can actually play Holdem 22-handed if you desired (23 if you don't use burn cards) since you'd have 44 hole-cards + 3 burn cards + 5 board cards. Now, SHOULD you ever play more than 10-handed, I would say NEVER.
Out of curiousity, who has a table that fits 13 people? Were you playing in Mitt Romney's dining room?Read my musings on poker and life at PokerNewsBoy.com, and My Poker Blog

lol I don't know how playing over 10 handed even effects what can come out etc. Does playing over 10 handed effect probabilities how does number of players effect outcomes or does it?
Either way Nm I would play tight aggressive in all situations calling with weaker hands is for the most part giving a donation as they hit very badly most of the time and when they do hit they don't always get paid when they are monster or when they hit weakly they are often dominated by a better hand. There are exceptions to everything so this is general advice
Also good players will notice you calling a lot and what hand strengths you show up with and will value bet you or fold when you show much aggression knowing you hit a monster.
People like Phil Ivey can play a large range of hands profitably due to ridiculous experience and skill but for everyone else its good to start with a tight strategy and work up with there.
Also the early your position on the table the better the hand you should want to have you can steal a bit more from late but don't go crazy and you want to be raising and aggressive for the most part. Look up the starting hands chart it will give you an idea.

It changes the chances of people having strong hands, in a 10-handed game I think (going by memory here) the odds of running into AA vs. KK is like 20-to-1, where in a 8-handed game its' 24-to-1, and in a 6-handed game it's about 40-to-1. So as you can see, the more players the higher likelihood you are gonig to see big hands.lol I don't know how playing over 10 handed even effects what can come out etc. Does playing over 10 handed effect probabilities how does number of players effect outcomes or does it?
More importantly it changes the structure of the game since you can play 13 hands instead of 10 but pay the same amount of blinds (basically three extra hands). So if the goal of poker is to win more than the blinds are eating away at your stack, by playing 13-handed you can play tighter (this is just theoretical and doesn't take into account the other players and such).Read my musings on poker and life at PokerNewsBoy.com, and My Poker Blog

Every player added or taken away from a table should change your range... 13 handed is just ridic, so is 12 or 11 and I openly bitch about 10 every chance I get... 9 or less is ideal

A little off-topic but what would your opening range be from UTG in a 13-handed game? In LIMIT Holdem I'd think JJ+ and maybe AK and AQs? I can't even imagine opening much more than this in a typical NL cash-game (if it was passive it would be a different story)

Holy crap you'd need like a 6beer minimum to play 13handed. Suggest to your friend to break it up into 2 tables until you can merge at 9 left.
