$200+$30 mtt NLE Tournament
blinds 100/200 ante 25
Ive built my stack up from the starting 10k to about 16-18k, and feeling good. New guy comes to the table, younger dude and starts raising 2.5x about every other hand. He had gotten 3 bet 2 times already, both to which he folded, once from me and once from another person. I have him covered by about 3 times hes at around 6400-6700.
This time, he pops it again up to 500, I look down at pocket 7's and decide I wanna see where he's really at and clear out the rest of the mid range hands. I 2.5x his bet to 1250, everyone folds around to original raiser, who doesn't tank long before 4 betting me up to around 3400. At this point im thinking, okay, wrong time to 3 bet and a fold is inevitable in most situations. Now, after a short tank, just to make him sweat a bit or get a reaction I ask him how much he has left behind, while im still 98% sure im going to fold.
When he showed me his remaining 3300-3500, he looked so reluctant to even imagine putting it in the pot. Big weakness read, and a few moments later, I 5-bet him all in. He was still reluctant to put in his chips but he seemed like he had to play the hand, and at this point I knew I was at least ahead.
Villain calls for his tournament life, Showdown:
Pot size: about 14K
Me: 7h7d
Villain: AdQd
Flop comes 8x9x10x 4x 10x
I drag the hefty pot and feel great about this play, even though I would rarely make such a 5 bet preflop with a mid pocket pair...what do you guys think?

Crazy play, good read, or lucky race?

Good reads but still crazy play and you got lucky. Based on your reads I would guess his range is AQ+,88-TT which you don't fare too well against with 77.

Well, this is dependent on what other hands he's shown. We would be hesitent to get it all in (but we probably would) with those hands, but some people are very comfortable doing that. Given a weak read, I think could probably open that range up to include AJ-AQ and 55-TT (maybe even smaller PP, if the guy has shown a tendency to gamble). I think it's more likely to open his range if he's been 3bet off a few hands, he might pick a marginal one to make a stand with.
This means you were still pretty lucky but at least now (with that range), you are fairing pretty well. The previous range leaves us 41% against his 59%, my range puts it at 48/52. The more hands you add that he could do this with, just improves your chances.
Over all, a good move that paid off for you.Trons

you put over a third of your chips in play with what's at best a coinflip... horrible play... easy fold... move on to the next hand and wait for a better position where YOU put THEM to a tough desicion...

Our villain here raises 2.5x, which is a pretty solid raise size. He also will fold to 3bets. This makes me think he's solid, and less of a gambler.
While we do have a read of weakness, I think this just means we're facing the bottom of his range, which still crushes 77. Hands like AJ,AQo,weak pairs should have folded to a 3bet, which he has a history of. This is also why I think 5betting is bad, if he was going to fold, he would have done it after your 3bet.
