question: i was playing a home game w/my friends. $40 buy in, 8 guys, .25/.50 blinds. i lost my 1st $40, rebought another $40. i lost my 2nd $40, rebought another $40. i get my stack up to $100 w/my 3rd $40. i am stuck $20 and decide to take $40 off the table because i bougth 3x... a guy said i couldn't do that. now i know the definition of 'going south' but i was not taking any earings off the table... i just didn't want to lose my 3rd re-buy. since i am not taking any earings (i.e., other people's money) i think its ok for me to do that... i don't think i am being a jerk here... thoughts???

technically if you are playing cash games you should be able to cash out whenever.
but more importantly, it's a home game with friends...shouldn't be a problem. establish the house rules beforehand next time~!

I don't think you are ever allowed to take off from the table even if you are behind , your only option is to cash out with the full stack .

cash game rules.
home game/casino game... (doesnt matter which two simply because your playing a game involving money,so you should always follow the rules correctly!)
if you have less than the maximum buy in, i.e $40 was maximum.
example, if you leave the table and you take your $33 , this is okay, but when you come back to the table you must have $33, you can choose to top up to $40, but you cannot have less than $33.
Same as if you put $40 on table and you take it up to $225.
If you leave the table (cash out) you must cash out all of your money , the full $225 must leave with you.
AND
if you come back to that same table that same night, you must buy in for the ful $225, so if youve gone and spent $20 down the shop/store... and only have $205 left, YOU CANNOT buy back in.
All money at a cash table, stays at a cash table.
if you want to cash out, you take the full amount.
BTW if you dont wanna lose your 3rd $40, just stick to the left of your stack ( still in full view for everyone to see, as higher denomination chips must be viewable and all on the table ). but just dont break into it, and dont let people know you dont wanna break into it as they will overbet you to get you to fold as you dont wanna break into it.
hope it helps, GLPoker: Am I still gambling if I have the nuts?

Well in a home game, whoever is hosting the game makes the rules(house rules), but usually if you want to take money off the table, it has to be the full amount. Then you have to wait 30 minutes before you can buy back in for the minimum.
So lets say you have $150 at the table and the max buy-in is $50, you must take all $150 off the table, and wait 30 mins before you can buy back into that table for only $50. If you want to buy back in before the 30 minutes is up, you must sit back down at that table with the full $150 that you took off.

It must be annoying as hell when someone cashed like $500 and joins with $50 after 30 minutes , that's just bad poker etiquette and I wouldn't play that game .

Just like B2B said, this is just a matter of etiquette. Online, if you cash out of a table and then sit down at the same table ten minutes later, your only option is to buy in with the same amount you left with considering you are ahead. In your case, if it was a friendly home game so it is up to the house.
