    Default poker questionnaire

    Hi Guys,

I am from Nottingham Trent University in the UK, and currently conducting research on poker players. Thanks to the kindness of your moderator Tyler, I am able to post a link to my survey on this forum. All im asking is for you guys to give up 10 minutes of your time to fill it out for me.

The most important thing you should know is that all participants and their data will be kept ANONYMOUS (you will be asked to create a unique identifier which can be a number or a name). Even this forum is going to be kept anonymous. This is very important as it ensures that you may be more honest in the answers you give.

My email address is in the questionnaire, so if you have any questions, or you want your responses to be deleted, then please do not hesitate to contact me.

While I'm here for the next month (however long it takes to get 100 participants) I will try to contribute to some of the other threads in the general discussion areas

Thank you all for your time

    James Wilks

p.s tyler is going to post something that I sent him which enabled me to have access to this forum. Stay tuned...

When James first contacted me asking for permission to post a survey on the forums, I said no. Apart from spam, I don't really like new members using the forum for their own personal benefit such as conducting surveys and the like.

However, James was very persistent yet polite at the same time, and so I told him that if he sent me a photo of himself holding up a sign saying "I love PokerForums.org" that I'd let him make his thread.

And so, here it is! Nice to see a team player

So, take 10 minutes to help him out with his survey!

Done. But I think this survey is suggesting that all poker players are simply gamblers and consistently lose money, which is far from the truth. Infact, most "good" poker players who know how to manage a BR invest a certain amount and never look back.

I'm all for doing research, and I started this survey in hopes of helping out. But it quickly became apparent as to the bias built into the survey.

First page felt like a GA questionnaire. Second page felt like an ADHD questionnaire. Gave up then, but did read the rest. The fact that I was allowed to select both yes & no answer for each question also belied the quality of the test.

The questions repeatedly use the word gamble. Which is technically, but not totally accurate. Most (not all) good poker players do not gamble. While poker is a game that wagers money with a element of chance in the outcome, the good player's don't gamble. Personally, playing slots, or roulette, or even Black Jack almost makes me ill. I know the odds, and I don't like taking chances when I know I'm setup to lose. Games where they don't have the edge do not appeal to most good poker players. You can't beat pure math, but you can beat other players. Poker is closer to the stock market than it is to most casino games. You evaluate risk vs reward, you make your investment, you realize when to buy more, or to get out of a market. Hard to figure out if that statement applies more to stocks or poker.

I'm curious as to your hypothesis and goal. I think people who are outside of the poker community lump us into the rest of the gamblers.
Marm is back, maybe. Been off for 3 years. Rusty as Hell.

Done. I have been to GA in the past, and have completed basically all questions on first page before. Hope this helps your study.

    Hi Guys,

I see some of you seem to think there may be bias in the survey. The term "gamble" is used very frequently and some of you are not happy with this. I would just like to state that these are pre exisiting questions and not ones that I have made up myself.

On someones statement that the first section seems like a GA questionnaire. The first lot of questions are from the DSM IV criteria for pathological gamblers so may have similarities with those from the GA.I would like to state that these questions being included do not mean that I am looking for pathological gamblers, and I assume that maybe there are none on this site. It is just a way of assessing how often you guys play poker. It is the most common form used in all types of research on the subject. The ones that seem like ADHD are about your own personality. They are there to assess what personlity characteristics you carry, and are in no way associated with ADHD. One set is from an impulsivness questionnaire, while the other is assessing competitivness.

One of the overall aims of my research is to see whether competitivness and imulsivness have an effect on how much people "gamble" on poker. I appreciate that there is a large amount of skill involved as I am a poker player myself (however, im pretty crap). But the term gamble in my research is used to describe playing poker with money at stake. As that is a form of gambling. Chances of losing though are greatly reduced if you are a skilled player which i appreciate.

MARM - I hope my reponse has put your mind at ease in some way. I agree 100% that people outside this community DO lump you along with other forms of gambling. Hence why my research is solely on poker.I always have an interest in such an area, along with having many friends who play it quite frequently. There be a slight bias in the questions, which is unintended, it is just the area I am interested in and the existing questionnaires that are avaliavle for me to use.

All reponses and queries are greatly appreciated. It is healthy to have a discussion over something like this, and I would like you guys to know my objectives rather than completing something that you are unsure about. However, please do not think that I am against you lot, or anything like that. I realise this a lively community and I am a complete outsider but I can assure you that I mean no harm.

So far you have all been great and have helped me out alot. I currently have 15 questionnaires completed which is 10 more than yesterday. Keep it up guys!

    James Wilks

sorry for such a long reponse!

    This.

Would be great to see your hypothesis and goal, unless for some reason you think it would skew the way users respond on your survey.
