Hey all - I've been lurking forever but this topic inspired me to post.
I've gone through samples & seen clay, composite with inserts, composits, & cheap lousy ebay dice chips. After all of this I think that if you want a GOOD chip you have to spend $0.50/chip to get clay chips and if you want it customized you have to spend $1.00/chip.
The cheap chips are horrible and almost unplayable in my opinion, but a nice middle ground is the NEXGEN chips (google search for it). These are composite chips with edgespots that are $0.20/chip and feel pretty good. The cool this is that they have a recessed center that you can put your own customs labels in. There's a guy
here that makes/sells just the labels.
1000 chips = $200 + $50ish for the labels
