Default Putting a chip on cards

I've seen many of the pro's on TV do this...they put a chip on their pocket cards during each game. Any reason behind this?

Its done to "protect" the cards -- otherwise in a lot of places if another card touches them -- for instance if someone is mucking their hand and toss it too far and it slides over your cards -- your hand is automatically dead. It also prevents the dealer from accidently grabbing them thinking you've folded your hand.

If you don't put anything atop your hand, its a good habit to get yourself into.

Some places even require a card protector.

it's a good habit to KNOW, I actually only do it if I'm in the 1 or 10 seat at a table. I find people that use a card protector telegraph their intentions if they look at their cards out of turn, which most people do.

as a side note I hate people that put a protector on their cards before they look at them! It just slows the game down, use your hands to protect your cards until you decide to play.

I sometimes use a card protector, a $1 Horshoe chip I got off of ebay, or I just usually jsut put half of a stack of chips over my cards. I am currently keeping my eyes open for a bobble-head version of my avatar (Slider, Inidians Mascot) suitable in size to be used as a chip orotector. That way you guy will know hwo I am this summer when I play in the WSOP final table.....

If you want to know Marn, I'll be the one with the Montreal Canadiens Zippo as a card protector...

i wonder if the casinos would look kindly upon using pocket aces to protect your cards.
"but it's my good luck charm!"
