I dont expect anyone to read it, but if you do be away its completely terrible, I really could care less about school, im at the FT of a 45 person SNG
Everyday thousands of Americans go into casinos throughout the United States and wager money on the chance that they will win even more money even though the odds are significantly against them doing so. In every single casino game the odds are against the gambler and in favor of the house, this is how casinos make a profit. Even though some lucky person will win millions of dollars with a pull of the lever once in a while the casino will still make a profit from all of the times the foolish gambler did not win anything. There is just one game where the odds are even and if you are skilled enough you can make the odds in your favor, which happens to be poker. Playing against the house will never return a long term profit, however playing against other gamblers can return long term profit if you are skilled enough. Thousands of casinos offer poker rooms where you can go and play against other gamblers, the reason they host poker games is because they take a “rake”. A rake is defined as [1] the percentage of each pot extracted by the house dealer for hosting the game. The rake is what makes it profitable for the casinos to host gambler vs. gambler action. The new generation of poker is on the computer, or online gambling. It has skyrocketed in the past eight years; legal, legitimate, sites are offering poker players the chance to play twenty four hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The rake is low and there are less negative effects when you can play in the comfort of your own home on your terms. The emergence of online poker was glorious to almost everyone involved, the poker sites made money with little work, the players were happy with the service, and the wide variation of games made it possible for players of all economic backgrounds to participate, from the wealthy all the way down to the complete broke because they could play for free! The poker world was booming, the World Series of Poker Main Event attracted 512 players in 2000, by 2004 it attracted 2,576 and just two years later in 2006 it brought a record 8,773 players where the winner took home 12 million dollars in cash [2]. A lot of this boom had to do with internet poker and tournaments where if you win they will pay the money for you to play in the World Series of Poker Main Event, also known as a satellite. For the first time it was possible to enter the main event without risking ten thousand dollars, a few lucky people even got to play for free from satellites they won. The poker world was booming, everyone was happy, and money was being won, the perfect combination for a great sport.
The government, like with most things, felt that the poker world was becoming too big and needed to find a way to stop the madness. They needed to regulate the industry to save people from themselves. Rare stories would come out about how underage children would sign up to play poker using there parents bank accounts and credit cards and lose tons of money. Stories about how people would win loads of money and go bankrupt a few months later surfaced, similar to stories about how people win the lottery and foolish spending lands them in debt just a few months later. Lame stories about how people could not stop themselves from spending way to much money and how they felt the online poker sites were rigged to let certain people win. Therefore the government felt they must take action. The government launched an investigation into online gambling and the ill effects it has caused people. They concluded that it needed to be limited and more strictly regulated, but like other things including alcohol and cigarettes it was not constitutional to completely ban online gambling, especially gambler versus gambler. They passed a law into place in 2006 crippling well over half of online poker websites and eliminated all sports betting, gambling versus the house, and gambler versus house games completely. Very few people participated in these but it crippled the United States online poker playing by 56% in 2007. The number of players in the world series of poker drastically decreased from the record setting 2006 year and now there are only three sites that American players can legitimately play at with numerous other players, those are
Poker - Online Poker Games at PokerStars - Play Texas Holdem ,
Online Poker - Play Online at Full Tilt Poker Room , and
Online Poker? Absolute Poker. | Play poker online today – free!. Before the 2006 legislation there were well over 50 websites in which you could wager money to play poker but since then they are forced to take there business abroad.
No country in the world has strict laws like the United States has for gambling. No one could ever make an excuse for demolishing Las Vegas because people go and lose money there. Casinos continue to rake in millions and millions of dollars a day as foolish players hope to come and get lucky even though they have a better chance of getting struck by lightning in the parking lot than they do hitting a mega million dollar jackpot. There is no reason to have these strict laws that prohibit legitimate companies from providing a service to willing customers. The argument that people cannot control themselves online and risk too much money is hypocritical, you can go to any casino in the United States and do the exact same thing you can at online gambling websites just be able to do it in the comfort of your own home, an advantage many people love. There is a theory behind why the United States has banned most of these online gaming websites, they pay no US taxes but bring thousands of dollars in profit to US citizens. Almost all online gambling websites are based offshore to avoid regulations and higher taxes that the United States would institute. The three mainstream websites that are still available to United States citizens all happen to be based in the United States, this is no coincidence. An attempt to ban online poker would have similar results as prohibition of alcohol did in the early part of the century. Online poker would decrease but it would not be even close to non-existent. People will always find a way to do something they want to do, especially when the laws will not punish individuals for playing online poker, just the actual sites. The official law according to [3] does not stop people from gambling money online but it stops banks, financial institutions, and credit card companies from depositing or wiring any money to online poker accounts. Most websites have no other way of conducting business without the use of banks and credit card companies so many of these companies had no other choice but to look outside of the United States for business, but for the three major websites that still conduct major business within the United States they have adopted the use of electronic checks which are legal and are the best way for American citizens to deposit money into online poker site accounts. The main reason this new legislation has so many online poker players outraged is because it helps absolutely no one and hurts thousands of players that could be enjoying poker on the internet from the convenience of their own home. The argument that the government is stopping people from wasting money is ludicrous, people have been gambling for years in casinos and now the next generation is still going strong. According to [4] 70 million Americans play poker regularly and of that 70 million more than one third play poker regularly online, a little over 23 million online gamblers. The fuzzy fine print in these laws is also under question, in the law it states that games of chance are not allowed to be bet on but anyone that plays poker regularly knows that poker is not a game of chance; it is a game of skill. The line in the famous poker movie rounders really points that out with the line “Why do you think the same five guys make it to the final table of the World Series of poker every year? What are they the luckiest guys in Vegas?” Good players consistently make money playing poker and more and more poker professionals are making poker their fulltime job. Poker is not a game of luck, and the government passing legislation calling poker a game of luck is inaccurate.
This new legislation is hypocritical and bad for business. These laws were motivated by alternate factors, namely the fact that the American government is not getting their piece of the pie. Poker sites have said they would be willing to pay American taxes but the government refuses to listen and online poker play for American citizens is severely limited now because of these laws. Poker is a great sport where lots of money can be won, however lots of money can be lost so with all things in life you must be careful. All poker sites restrict deposit limits and the number of times you can make deposits in a certain amount of time. This is not the governments business, if people want to enjoy themselves with a nightly game of online poker they should be able to do so.
