Default Question on Showdown rules....

Heard a rumor from the guy at a home game I play at about showdowns. My understanding was the last player to bet had to show his cards first then other players had the opportunity to show if they had the best hand or muck if they had a losing hand.

His point was that everyone had to show if it was equal action. Ex. Bet and a Call. This some what makes sence because of pokerstars and full tilt being able to go in hand history and look at mucked cards? He also said he asked the floor manager about this rule in Las Vegas.

Im just wondering what the real ruling is.....and if you hafta asked to see mucked cards and if its against poker etiquette to ask to see mucked cards and thats why it is not widely forced?

yeah i tried looking up the rules after you said we're changing the rules for that home game...
http://www.readybetgo.com/poker/rule...rules-824.html

There are two basic schools of thought regarding rules for showing hands. The first is what I call the “traditional school.” The traditional rule in poker is that all hands at the showdown must be shown to the whole table upon request of anyone in the game. Those who wish to retain this rule recognize that it has drawbacks, but believe any rule controlling the showing of hands will have drawbacks. They also believe the new rules used in some places are inadequate to address the situation, so we should stick with what we have, needing the traditional rules to police the game and make the players feel comfortable that there is no collusion taking place.

The other school, which is steadily growing, is what I will call the “revisionist school,” which states that we need to take a fresh look at the situation and realize that it is better to eliminate non-winning hands from being shown. This school believes the showing of non-winning hands is of minimal value in the prevention of cheating (because cheaters can simply muck their hands before the final bet) and adds a great deal of unpleasantness and friction to the atmosphere of playing.

i'm not exactly sure if that's right or what... and i don't really get that "revisionist school" method.

anyone else know anything?

Actually, if anyone at the table anywhere wants to see a losing hand, the dealer has to show it. It's just horrible etiquette to ask.

Only a person in the hand can request to see hands at showdown.

However, If the loosing player quickly mucks his hand at showdown, no one can see his hand b/c the Dealer cannot take cards out of the muck.

Smart players quickly muck as soon as they see they are beat so no one is able to see their hands - not even the dealer can pull cards out of the muck.

So, if you want to see a hand.... force the other player to open first... or tell the dealer before opening that you want to see all hands showndown.

Many players make the mistake of pompously displaying their hand without realizing the value in seeing opponents hands and how they played it vs you.

We have a no slow-rolling rule at our games. If the last person bets a bluff, and is called, he can say "Darn, you caught me, I have shat" and if the caller thinks he's ahead, then he shows and the last raiser is welcome to muck.

One time, a bluffer was called and he immediatly mucked his cards, and since they were dead the caller did not show at all. Another time a bluffer mucked and the donk caller showed K high and the mucker wanted to pull his cards out to show his A. We told him tough, his cards are dead so maybe dont muck so quickly next time.

Most people at our home games are either too drunk, too new or just dont care to analyse how an opponent played a hand after the fact. In a casino, or at a game with new players I like to size them up by knowing how they played a particular hand.
