Default The time it takes to move up in stakes

Heres the question, and if you have time plz read my text and answer that too.

My question is to you all who play NL1000 and above:

How long did i take you to become good and comfortable playing NL1000 and above? (count when you started to play poker from scratch)

-------------------------------------------------------------

I guees everyone who began playing poker on ther internet started their play at small stake, like 0,10-0,50cent blinds.

I have played poker since summer 2005, and i played NL50$ for about one year, and did pretty good, my average was about 1500$ a month.

In summer 2006 i started to play nl200 and thought I would make 4 times more here, but no, was still aroun 1500-2000$ a month.

In 2007 i begun to play NL400. Thought I would at least make like 3-4k a month here, but nope.

I always go by the rule to have 10 buy ins on my account before i step up to a new level.

Besides this, I realized I have like a "cycle", when Im doing great at the tables, this will usaully just last for a couple of weeks, and then i have a real badluck time for about some weeks, and this goes on, and on, and on, what the hell should I do about this? Its so frickin frustrating.

does anyone else experience the exact same thing? You know any good soulotion to it? My own solution is to quit playing for a week or 2, but that is difficult... very difficult.

Well.

You could be like my and grind the lowest of the low for a year untill you are finally alittle overrolled for NL25 (50 BI's) or you could be like my brother who "cant win low stakes" and takes his $80 and fullrolls 1/2 and has $1000 to shortstack ($70 BI's) 1/2 in a week. Then goes busto the next day (he honestly got his money in ahead almost every single hand. It was so sickening how terribly he ran. Redeposits $100 and has $1000 in 2 days.

You cannot play with 10 BI's. You will lose it. It just happens. If you move up every time you get 10 BI's you will bust. 30ish should be more like it even up to 60 is not unreasonable.

Seriously, 10 buyins isn't enough. If you don't want to go broke eventually you're gonna need at least 25-30. As you move up you're gonna need more as well cos you won't be as experienced at that level.

Dan is saying that 10 buy ins is not enough to move up and he's right. If you've read some of my posts on here, you'd know that I'm running pretty bad lately. Before this downswing started, I was sitting on $3k and playing $100NL. In the last 3 months I've dropped to about $1k and if I hadn't dropped down to $50NL for awhile, I probably would have lost my whole roll.

I've always tried to follow Chris (Jesus) Fergusons advice, never put more than 5% of your bankroll on the table at a time. So if you're playing $100NL, you should have at least $2000.

I still think 20 buy ins is good enough for a level if you are a good enough player to play at that level.

I think if you drop 20 it isnt purely down to luck, you have to tilt and play bad as well.

I think when youre above 20 BIs you can take isolated shots at the next level and if you lose the buy in just drop back to the level below.

You can also buy in half to see how you play at that level and this will also allow you to play with less fear of losing more money than youre used to.

probably took me about a year and 2 months of playing to get to nl1k. I would say I was pretty comfortable when I started playing NL1k because of good bankroll management.

Anyways, imo you need at least 20 buyins to play at any level safely. And you need more if ur gonna multi-table that limit.

I usually move up like this, once i get over 20 buyins for the next level, then I will play anything up to 2 tables for that limit. Then 20-30BI = 2-3 tables, 30-40 buyins = 3-4 tables, etc. This is good because if ur multi-tabling (say u 8-table) with only 22 buyins, then ur gonna feel pretty stressed out cuz you have a lot of your money in play at once. And every beat that u take is gonna feel that much more painful.
