Default A league scoring formula

We are stating a Poker League, between about 20 friends. I am looking for a formula to keep score/stats on who is winning the league.

As stated will we have 20 league members and are looking to have about 15 total tournaments. Everyone will mostly like not be able to make every tournament. (May throw out a persons lowest 2 or 3 tournys) Thus, I am looking for a forumla to keep score that is fair. Keeping in mind that a tourny where 10 people show up, shouldn't count the same as one where say all 20 people show up. Any formulas anyone has or uses would be a big help, thanks.

James

Hate to link a rival site, but poker pages used to have a chart on the logrythmic method they use for their monthly rankings. I haven't peeked at Stars so they might be very similar in nature. I know the one at PP gives weight to the size of a tournament so that winning a bigger tournament carries more weight than winning a smaller one.

In a pinch you could always just assign a point for each person knocked out prior to that player so the winner of a 20-person tournament would get 19 points whereas winning a 12 person tourney would only give you 11 (of course this creates an argument when someone realizes that placing eightin in a 20-person tournament is worth as much as winning the 12-person one...)

[Edit: sqrt = square root ]

The math of the Stars one makes my head hurt... and it weighted the results based on size of buy-in and size of field. The PP one was used to rate freerolls to win a scholarship to PSOm except the more events you played was weighted heavier than how you actually did in them, but you stil needed to place somewhat well to do ok.

I used to race sailboats in a small yacth club and we used a very simple but effective scoring method.

Whatever place you got, you recieved that many points, so if you came in 6th, you got 6 points. if you came in 4th, etc... If you won, you only got 1/2 point. This was a little bonus for winning. If you DNS'd (Did not Start) you got the size of the field plus 2. If you DNF'd (Did Not Finish, started but puleld out during the race) you got the size of the field plus 1. I only had one DNF, but i had a good excuse, we started doing a really good Titanic imitation. Who ever had the LEAST amount of points at the end of the season, won.

You can easily apply this to a poker club. Each event, give points for their finish, and anybody who missed an event, give them the size of the field plus 2. I really cant think of a DNF scenario, since you just get blinded away.

That would have to be my recomendation.

Default Logrithmic league ranking system

Logrithmic league ranking system

Algorithm
---------
A player's score for a tournament is based on two
variables:
1. The size of the tournament, and
2. Where the player finished in the standings.

The score is computed using the following algorithm:
score = ln((p + 1) / f)

where

p = the participant count for the tournament and
f = the player's finish in the standings

Overall score is the average of all tournament scores.

Examples
--------
Malcolm finishes 7th in a 17 player tournament.
Malcolm receives 0.94 points:
. ln((17 + 1) / 7)

Dr. Neau's Comments
-------------------
Fair and balanced rankings system.
Rewards players for higher finishes.
Rewards players for doing better in bigger tournaments.
Does not penalize players for missing a tournament.

Algorithm
---------
A player's score for a tournament is based on three
variables:
1. The size of the tournament,
2. Where the player finished in the standings, and
3. The cost of the buy-in.
The score is computed using the following algorithm:
score = 10 * (sqrt(n)/sqrt(k)) * (1 + log(b+0.25))

where

n = the participant count for the tournament and
k = the player's finish in the standings
b = the cost of the buy-in
** Only the top 15% of the finishers in a tournament
receive points.

Overall score is the average of all tournament scores.

Examples
--------
Bon finishes 3rd in a 150 player tournament with a $20
buy-in.
Bon receives 163.09 points:
. 10 * (sqrt(150)/sqrt(3)) * (1 + log(20+0.25))

Dr. Neau's Comments

Haven't tried it yet.

Default Net Gain league ranking system

Net Gain league ranking system

Algorithm
---------
A player's score for a tournament equals his net gain for
that tournament.
Overall score is the sum of all net gains.

Examples
--------
Angus pays $10 to buy into a tournament. Along the way, he
purchases an add-on for $10. He knocks a player out and
receives a $5 bounty. He finishes just out of the money.
Angus score for the tournament is -15:
. -10 points for the $10 buy-in
. -10 points for the $10 add-on
. +5 points for the bounty he received.

Dr. Neau's Comments
-------------------
Players are not penalized for missing a tournament. In a
200 player tournament, the player finishing last can
receive the same score as the player finishing just out of the money.

Default Software plug

BTW, if you use Dr. Neau's Tournament Manager to manage your tournaments, calculating your league rankings is just a press of a button.

If you happen to be interested, you can get info at http://drneau.com

I'm not trying to plug it...just seems like you could use some help. You could also create an excel spreadsheet.
