To tip or not to tip?
Well If you read my other threads, by now u will know waht ive only been to the casino 3 times. All 3 times I've been successful! Anyways ever since my 1st casino game I've noticed theres a lot of nice people at the table and whenever someone goes all in its a auto "good luck all in" I really like the "poker respect" its not necessary but its a nice thing to hear.
Anyways back on topic. If you pick up a pretty good size pot do u tip the casino dealer? I always do just cause I dont want to look cheap. but like they didnt do anything the pots we win is just our own skill and dumbluck sometimes. I dont know.... I tip them cause its the nice thing to do i guess.
Im back and fourth on this topic like I dont even have to tip them. Whats your views on this?

tipping is typical at all levels of live poker
when i win a pot bigger than the blinds i tip a $1.....playing $100-400 buy in games
if i win a major pot like a double up or bigger.....i tip them $2-3

I tip about the table average for my 1/2NL table. $1 for normal pots, maybe $3-5 for huge pots. I only take down about 2 pots an hour, so tipping isn't as big an expense for me as it is for some of the looser players... That said, I don't feel obligated to tip and there are some subpar dealers who I do not tip at all

I hate the idea of tipping because "you have to otherwise you look cheap". Tipping should be because of good service, a service better than you expected. If I'm at a restaurant and I get shitty service there isn't a chance in hell I'm tipping, even if it means looking like I'm being cheap. They get paid to do a job (albeit not that much, but they took the job) and tips should be the incentive to work harder and satisfy the customer.
IMO the same goes for a casino poker table. If the dealer does a shitty job and keeps exposing cards I'll be fucked if I'm gonna tip him when I win a big pot. If I enjoy the table and I reckon they deserve a tip, sure I'll give him probably 1bb per big pot I take or maybe give him/her a few bucks when I leave the table.
I've only been to a casino once in my short poker lifetime, playing a £30 NL MTT in Edinburgh. 50 entrants, in the end I came 4th (77 rivered me for a 2 outer and nailed my KK, but that's another river rat story!) and won £100. The dealers were AWFUL. They got the rules wrong, the side pots wrong, we kept having to correct them every 5 minutes, but at the end the tourney director said "we ask you to tip the dealer £10 each or so". The winner gave it but there wasn't any chance of me doing it, I was outa there! Those dealers barely deserved a job imo, let alone a tip.
Man that was some rant! Anyway just my 2c worth.

Id agree with you there but isnt it different for those in the US? ive heard of friends being treated like shit for not tipping bad service on holiday in the US. As if its just an unwritten part of the price.

I think tipping is much more "expected" in the US than in the UK. I don't know whether it's to do with wages or just the culture but to me a tip should be a reward for doing a good job.
I've only been to the US a couple of times but always had excellent service, imo they deserved the tip. Maybe I was just lucky then but half the places in the UK are the complete opposite.

Most of dealers and waiters salary comes from tips. They're usually paid less than minimum wage with the idea that tips will make up the difference. So as long as you're not getting bad service, I would always tip. Even if the dealer is doing just a mediocre job, not being overly friendly and just dealing the cards, I'd still tip him. Remember, it's a person working a job and not everyone is gonna be all cheery and enthusiastic every time they're working......I know I'm not. You're having fun playing poker, winning money and probably having a few drinks along the way and all the while the dealer is on the other side of the table serving you. The least you can do is throw him $1 when you're raking in $100.
Now if the dealer/waiter is being rude and isn't really doing their job, that's a different story.

Maybe I'm just not a very sympathetic person, I dunno, but they are getting paid and they took the job in the first place. They can do a mediocre job and get their wage, but the idea of the tip should be the better they are the more they get paid, not just they get tipped for the sake of it. I've worked in bars in the UK, getting minimum wage. To get tipped in a bar/nightclub job here you need to stand out and make the customer want to tip you, that's how it should be everywhere I think.
Don't get me wrong though, if they do the job well, deal the cards, keep the table running smoothly and don't fuck anything up I will happily tip them.

I'm a big tipper with servers growing up with a restauranteur and bartending, but don't feel forced to tip dealers in low stakes games (NL200 and lower). If you win a pot where you profit more than half a stack a couple of bucks is fine, but tossing $5 for dragging a $50 pot's just dumb. I play a 5/10 game with a $1 ante and a NoMax. buy-in and tip $1 for a pot and $5 for a big pot. If a dealer's keeps the game going fast, toss extra to them before they leave, definitely.

There are definitely good dealers. They keep the game moving, they announce how many players are in the pot (important if you're in seat 1 or 10 and can't see very well), how many are on the side pot, how much additional to call etc. I'll usually throw them a tip when they are relieved even if I didn't drag a pot during that 30 minutes...
Then there are the dealers that just strike me as slimey/sleezy. If you won a small pot UTG and give them a $1 tip, they try to take your $2 blind too. Or they repeatedly say "good hand, good hand" after you've won as if they had some part in your play and deserved a share...
The only dealer I have on "tip probation" does all of the above. But about a month ago, he fucks me over by giving my seat to a high-rolling big tipper (seats are supposed to be held ~20 minutes). I come back from getting food (gone 15 minutes) and he says to put my name on the list (~1.5 hour wait for the game I'd been playing in for 8 hours that day). The high roller guy plays once a week for 4 hours, but tips ~$7-$10 a hand he wins. I figure the dealer earned an extra $20 by letting that guy take my seat instead of waiting for the someone to bust out, but he's lost quite a bit more than that in my tips since I play 40-50hours a week and don't plan to start tipping him anytime soon...
