How can one tell which stakes they can play.... like.. I want to play higher stakes.. but I am not sure if I can afford it. How can I determine this?

It really depends what games you are playing and how easily you can replace the roll if you lose it. I found this site useful:

I recommend Cardrunners for superb poker coaching. It was honestly the single biggest improvement in my game signing up there! Sign-up fee might seem steep, but it pays itself back within weeks.

first of all determine how much $ you have to play with.

If you have $1,000 you can play 25$ or 50$ no limit tables

If you have like 300$ then you should prolly play $10 NL
btw, 10NL, 25nl, 50 nl etc... means you buy in for 10$ max, 25$ max, etc...

The reason for having a big bankroll (not playing w/ all your money) is b/c when times get tough, you will have money left. If you play with a large chunk of it, all it takes is 1 bad month and you will be busto!

Now that you understand that you can only play w/ a small % of your bankroll, you must figure out if you can win at the stakes you are at.

So if you can afford to play .10-.25 (nl 25) but you keep loseing, you shoudl step down to lower stakes. To see how you are doing, we use software called poker tracker, and poker office.

Poker tracker is more popular IMO. Thats what I use.

My frist month @ full tilt I was playing 60$ tables, and was running hot. Over the past few days I am down about 120$ - thanks to my bankroll however, I don't sweat b/c I still have plenty of money in the account, + I know I will kill these fish once I get out of the unlucky streak.

Good Bankroll skills is the most important thing IMO.

I've said for a while that if you don't have a heavily comfortable amount to play $25NL, you should play SNG's. More money to made and the competetion in the <$20 that you'd play before having enough to play $25NL is just so bad that getting from $250 to $500 to $1000 will happen more efficiently.

True dat. I've never swung larger the swings I've had on FTP since Party shut down. I'm always either on the sickest heater ever or I wanna blow my head off.
