i've played NL online for several years now. currently i play buys in ranking from 400-800.

when should you move up?

when you can afford to.....sorry the formula isn't there for you.

a few things to remember:

1. always sit with max allowable for a limit, in NL. NL is about maximizing your profits.

2. when you can sit with the max, and play your game, without worrying about what happens if you lose a stack or two, then its the right limit for you. if you find yourself being overly cautious, then you are too high.

3. so for a $100 buy in, for example, is that right for you? can you afford to lose $200-300 quickly? if not you should stick with a $50 game. if you can absorb some bad beats and still play without fear, then its the right limit for you.

hope i helped

Since you're asking this question, I'm assuming you're at least *somewhat* new to online play. With that in mind, I'll pass along some useful advice I found on a different site.

The article recommended never sitting down with more than 5% of your total bankroll, at a no-limit table. The swings are high enough that you don't want to risk a larger portion than that on any one hand. From experience, this seems to be true. If I put say, 10% of my bankroll on the table, I'm nervous about losing it, and jolted if I actually do. So the easy answer is to build up your bankroll until 5% covers a larger buy in.

I halfway agree with the previous post, because I used to always put in the max buy in for a table. $10 on a 5-10 cent table, for instance. It's not bad advice, but again, consider how much of your total bankroll you're putting into play.

The bottom line is that poker is a game of skill AND chance, and you never want to throw away too much of your roll at once, even if you're just playing for entertainment. You will have plenty of hands where you SWEAR you had it, and the all-in doesn't go your way.

We're not spamming. There are three of us that started that site, so that's the most people you'll see. Also, read my posts and tell me I'm just posting quickies to get seen. I only respond when I have something to say. If this was fly-by-night marketing, it just wouldn't be time effective.

Are you using a database? If not, start and if so, you'd want at least 25k hands as a winning player and how many BI's depends on how many tables you play. most important thing to remember is that poker isn't a sport. There's no trophy or bigger all-star team when you play a slightly more expensive game. It's just slightly more expensive.

What do you mean by using a database? I've played home games for a lot of years, but have just gotten into online money play in the last few months.

PokerTracker or PokerOffice. Their websites are their names. Either/or are very suitable. PO's perfect is you only play Holdem, but if you don't, go for the full PT package.
