I have a scenario. Satellite tournament, 27 spots place. 28-30 people left, you have 30 BB. Not a big reason to get involved, you are guaranteed a seat.

I think the only time you can fold them is certain situations involving a satellite tournament or a tournament with a very weird payout structure

yep spot on..
it depends on payout structure.. the more top heavy a toruney (ie top three place pay - you just keep pushing). If it is a satellite - it often pays to stop playing and slow down the table by exhausting your time bank... a process known as "Bobbing"

i folded AA and KK in a tourney 2 weeks ago.

10 players left - 10th place paid 270$

Anyone who got to final table got 1k extra in their prize money so waiting until 9th was secure

Came 3rd in the end for $2100.

PS. I would have lost both hands as well!!

Yeah HOHII mentions a bit about folding aces. Say you're in a satellite, 6 left, top 4 get the big tourney buy-in, but no extra cash for 1st-4th and 5th gets nothing. 4 of you have 4.5k in chips, other 2 have 1.5k. Blinds are 100/200, and one of the players with 4.5k goes all in. Assuming pretty much equal abilities of the players, your chances of making the final 4 are better folding than by calling (you're 90% to qualify folding, and at absolute best you're 92% to win with aces when your up against AK, only 81% against KK).

I completely agree. Satelites or in general tournamnets where moving up one or two positions is important.

Of course, you don't want to fold them right away if you there is no one else in the pot. But if there are couple people in and the action is hot, you can safely stay away from it...

well...im suprised at responces on this thread...

your stack size has everything to do here with what you should do, if your one of the lower stacks you have to commit and go all the way if you want to get closer. And if you have a big stack and the blinds are pretty big sitting around folding major hands that come your way shows weakness, and if any good players are good enough to spot it they will push everyone out and steal blinds to get chips.

This is what you should be doing. everyone at the table is basicly thinking the same as you, there are some that dont need the money (if its money) at all, there filty rich in real life they just care about winning. They will realize that probably 80% of the tourny is left with people hungry for the money and they wont play any hands because there so close, and in turn get pushed around very easy.

in conclusion it depends on your stack size. if your delt AA and your avg stack size you have to play. your 70 to 30 preflop to win against a random hand and those odds are good enough to go for it. if you sit around you will get blinded away or get so low that when you do go all in, everyone will call you because your just desperate. If your Aces dont hold up then thats just a bad beat. and you move on.

Will...you make it sound like it's never ok to fold AA. So I present you with the following scenario:

It's a WSOP ME sat. Top 2 players qualify for a chance to be the World Champion of Poker. It's down to 3 players.

You: $15k in chips
Guy A: $15k in chips
SS: $1k in chips and $500 of it is posted as the BB

Guy A goes all in for $15k. You look down and see AA.
Call or fold?

lol obviously you have best hand possible so if the chip sizes were different then it would be a no brainer, but since SS is almost out, folding is a good option to. SS chip size was different, then its a whole different story. But you have best hand possible a call here is perfectly reasonable here to. if you lose then its a bad beat, if you win then your 98.9999999 guarenteed first place...
