I've never played a live casino game before. I've only played in impromptu home games and online so I'm having trouble understanding the procedure for a so-called "chip race". Robert's Rules of Poker says...

"deal one card to a player for each odd chip possessed. Cards are dealt clockwise starting with the 1-seat, with each player receiving all cards before any cards are dealt to the next player. The player with the highest card gets enough odd chips to exchange for one new chip, the second-highest card gets to exchange for the next chip, and so forth, until all the lower-denomination chips are exchanged."

How do you ever lose the chip race? It sounds like you're dealing for no reason. Aren't you just rounding up everybody's odd chips. It talks about how you can't be eliminated by losing a chip race but how do you lose?

There's got to be something here that Robert forgot to explain.

in a tournament, when they coller up the chipos (meaning stop using small denominations, and add in new larger chips) there is a few extra chips left. (like change). usually very small amount. so they do a race to pick out one lucky player from table to get everyones "change"

Yes I understand that but the procedure implies its not winner take all. It talks about more than 1 larger chip being awarded to multple players.

Basically, here's how it works... The live tourney you are in has reached the point where the $25 chips will no longer be used. The tourney manager will come around and color up everyone's chips. For every 4 $25 chips you have, you will receive 1 $100 chip. But likely, many of the players will not have an even $100 worth of $25 chips. Say after coloring up the even amounts, your table has these players with this many $25 chips left...

P1 - 2 chips
P2 - 3 chips
P3 - 0 chips
P4 - 1 chip
P5 - 2 chips
P6 - 0 chips
P7 - 2 chips
P8 - 1 chip
P9 - 1 chip

That leaves 12 $25 chips or $300 remaining. Cards are dealt to each player who had $25 chips left. P1 would get 2 cards, P2 gets 3 cards, P3 gets 0 cards, etc. until all players with chips left get cards. In this case, the 3 highest cards gets one of the remaining $100 chips. However, each player can get only one chip, so if P2 gets 2 aces, P1 gets an ace, and P4 gets a king, each of those 3 players gets a chip. Each poker room has their own way of breaking ties... (suits, first to get the card, etc...)

Clear as mud?

lol, i thought they always just rounded up. Isn't that where all the "extra" chips at the wsop supposedly came from?

That is possible. I'm sure each poker room or event has their own procedure. The procedure is what the President in Biloxi, MS used during one of the tourneys I entered there before it was totaled by Hurricane Katrina.
