Default Home games with friends

Ive seen a lot of guys in forums saying talking about games with friends. It seems the amount ranges from $10 tournys upwards.

Now when me and my mates have a session we usually play 2 or 3 games so no ones hanging around for the whole evening and the buy in is usually like $1 so $1.50.

You may think this seems a bit weak, but to be honest theres no fun in taking friends money its much more about everyone having a shitload of fun and the glory of winning.

I just think that hen you play with friends make the uy in lower and spend the rest on more beer.

Save taking money for idiots online

Fuck that, I play to win regardless of the buyin.

When I play home games the buyin is usually anywhere from $1-$20.

I only "have fun" when I'm playing my best and trying to win. It can be fun to hang around with friends and socialize, but I'm still playing p0k3ry.

I'll take whatever money I can in a poker game. I don't care if it's my friends, family or complete strangers online. I've worked too hard on my game to only use it at certain times. I enjoy playing with friends and having a good time, but if were playing, I'm playing my hardest.

Ditto Rog.

There is no reason to play poker for any reason other than to win money. The buy in should be whatever peeple are comfortable with. If $1 is all your friends feel comfortable with so be it. Me and my friends play 2 $25 tourneys each month.

Rergardless, I am in it to win it.

Actually, I disagree alot here. Nobody plays just to make money. That is our goal but there has to be something else there that keeps us playing. I enjoy the game, challenging myself, the strategy, the debates on PFO about different ways to play hands... this is all reason for me to play. Winning money is just the way the game is scored. Is the only reason to play baseball to score runs?

Anybody who plays poker "to make money" and for that reason alone is kidding themselves. It's a major reason to play, but not the only reason.

Note: Regardless, a play to win attitude is the only one of a winning player.

I disagree with you Rog, and agree with Antneye on this one. Sure you can enjoy poker and all that but money should be 99.8% of the reason you play, otherwise just play with play money. If you're in it to have oodles of fun, just play when you can't lose anything.

And the only reason to play baseball is to get the huge payday.

Usually when im playing with my friends we play $5-$10 tourney and if there is only 2 or 3 people that want to play we will play a $1 tourney for the hell of it but i think the reason that i play the other ones is to win money

Sadly, its the money (playing the game for real) that differntiates "real" games from the "Exhibition games" (play money tables). Try playing an exhibition game and let me know how well the "strategy" and debates over how to play goes. We score the game based on dollars. If you don't keep score you may as well deal out the cards face up all the way to the river.

I agree that all of the things you mentioned are what appeal to me and keep me playing. But I am playing to maximize my win rate, and hence make money. How much money is relative to the stakes you can afford and should have no bearing on the issue.

I gotta agree with Rog, here. Obviously we play the game to make money but it's not the only thing that keeps us coming back to the table. The excitement, the thrill, the table talk, the challenge and just the all around fun of it all are also big reasons why I enjoy the game.

There are lots of other things I could do to make money. I could work some overtime on my day off and make a lot more money than I would if I sat at home playing poker all day. But I choose to play poker for all of the reasons listed above, the money is just an added bonus.

I don't really see much point in havin a home game with friends for a $1 buy-in. I find poker the most entertaining when you've got a decent amount of money on the line, say $20, and you've got to make the decisions that count, rather than play for a $1 when you can make an all-in call and think oh well its only a buck, i'll call, it definatley brings the game down when everyone will just play recklessly. If you and your buddies just wanna drink, why not go to the bar or somethin. When i play with my buddies we usually have 8 -15 guys, and a $20 buy-in, so you can chat with all your friends and still have a chance at a really nice payday at the same time. Poker is all about making money, and it's a great feeling to win say $200 and beat all your buddies and know that you played good poker and you've gotta admit its a hell of a lot funner when you win $200 instead of say $10 in a $1 buy-in.

i enjoy the company at my home games, but it wouldn't be a game without something on the line. my guest also expect for there to be something on the line or they would find something better to do with their afternoon.
had one this weekend. played a few $5 heads up until the main event $20. there was enough intrest, so we played another $20.
every couple of months...its good to get together with friends and take their money...btw, up $80 from the games this weekend =)
