I have played in the £20 freezeouts several times and even won it once.
The standard is probably pretty similar to a tournament of the same value online. It is a higher standard than casinos as most people are there to play poker, rather than wildly gamble. That said there are always new players and fish in too - very varied standard.
I went down for a £20 freezeout over the bank holiday weekend and there were over 100 players (previously has been around 60 entrants when I've been).
We started with 1500 chips and blinds 25-50, within literally EIGHT hands the blinds had doubled to 50-100 (was supposedly 20 minutes a blind level). Now you only need to make a couple of limps and pay blinds twice and all of a sudden you are left with a stack of maybe 1100 and cost per round of 150, giving an M of under 8. This is pushing you towards all in or fold territory within just 2 orbits of the table.
I've not noticed this so clearly before, maybe the new players on my table were dealing slowly, maybe the blind structure was speeded up to compensate for the bigger field or maybe I have just been lucky enough to double up early on previously so the blinds haven't affected me so much - I don't know. But it didn't feel like there was much room to play poker.
It's definitely a friendly club though and worth going down to play. I would recommend the £5 rebuy tournament though, as there are lots of genuine beginners and fish (willing to rebuy many times) in these and when I last went 3-4 way all ins preflop were common. I went off in a strop, after my initial buy in when I went all in with pocket KK's and lost to some idiot with Q7o, complaining that it's not proper Poker!
BUT if you are used to rebuys and willing to take enough for several buy ins then there is very good value here (look on website 1st place has been over £1000). My friend survived the rebuy period and after that it plays as a normal freezeout, with a lot of dead money.

ok thanks. i might start with the £5 re-buy, although i've never played a re-buy tounament before. Can you re-buy if you lose all your chips or only if you go under a certain amount?
Must mean adopting a slightly more agressive than usual strategy i'd imagine?
And did you play any ring games there?
Thanks for the info though very helpful.

Rebuy rules vary. I'm pretty sure that at Gutshot if you fall below half your starting stack (which is 500) you can rebuy.
I play them a little bit looser than a freezeout but not too much, e.g definitely gamble by pushing all in on nut flush draws and the like. Some people just like to gamble several times and maybe go all in 3-4 times until you get a treble up and then play properly from that point.
The ring games are mainly PL Hold 'Em. The game I played was £1/£1 blinds with a buy in between £25 - £50. There were a couple of wild players there. I bought in with just £25 and a couple of guys kept straddling for £2 (putting in an extra blind voluntarily), so at times there was not much room to play post flop. I saw a guy call an all in Preflop with 45s just for a laugh (he won). I also watched one guy do about 4 buy ins in 20 minutes. He raised preflop and bet all in on the flop in the dark (cant remeber what he had but it was neither Ak/Aq or a big pair). He lost to a guy who called with trip 10's.
I busted out my original buy in and felt uncomfortable rebuying as I wasn't properly rolled so was playing a bit too tight, have little live experience and haven't played much PL before. If you are good PL cash game player then I would advise taking 4+ buy ins, playing fearlessly and you should have good expectation from the game.
There's also a £25 max buy in game with smaller blinds, which is self dealt and you pay a table charge of £3 an hour, which seemed a bit excessive to me, although from what I saw the game looked soft.
They also have higher PL Hold 'Em games and sometimes dealers choice or Omaha but if you haven't played live much before stay away from them.

Thanks, do you think £20 is enough for the £5 re-buy?
Just want to get some live experience under my belt without too much expense.

Yeah that's plenty for me. You have a 90 minute rebuy period. During that time just play pretty much like a normal freezeout and if you bust out 4 times it's just not your day!
Better than going all the way there for your first live tournie playing a £20 freezeout and losing KK vs AA on the 2nd hand.

im going in 2 weeks for first time. I've heard similar things too, it looks great. I know a few people who are going and i think you'd love it.
and about re-buys. Most of the time i play these i don't bother rebuying and i play pretty tight until the "freezeout" stage. I've cashed quite a few times doing this and you're getting a lot for your money. If i play a rebuy right i can easily get down to last 50 or so without noticing much difference at all with rebuy and freezeout.
