casino mannagment
well. as none of you allready know, im going to cmu in michigan, and they just so happen to have casino mannagment as a 4 year major.
so now before i get flamed let me explain something. sure, i know that its not going to be all bells and whistles, it wont be poker all day. however, i plan on playing poker as at least a "semi professional", or somewhat of a sidejob for the rest of my life. the whole idea of a casino intrestest me. the odds, the psycology of why people gamble, the free cokes at the poker table
however, i have NO idea what this major entails. i previously planned on majoring in business mannagment, and imo being the mannager of a casino would be alot better than some general place of work, business, or w/e.
does anyone here know anything about this? hows it pay? (im being realistic, sure, i would love to be a professional poker player, but im going to finish school unlike my friend... and i still have alot to work on in the area of my game, and who knows, poker might not be as popular in 10, 20 years.)
any info at ALL would be great, because i know this job probably isnt nearly as great as it sounds.

Well first off, you would start in an entry level position like any other career. You would have to prove yourself not only knowledgable but, hard-working, personable, tough but fair, and successful.
Most casinos do not allow employees to play at the tables so get the free cokes and VIP treatment out of your head.
You would start in a specific area, hotel, slots, table games, food, shops, etc and would have to work your way up through that area before you get anywhere near casino management i.e. handling, and being accountable for, all aspects of the casino.

If there's 1 thing I learned about casino management from the movie Casino, it's that you can't trust your friends.....especially if they're part of the mob.

you could try writing some letters to casinos, asking what sort qualifications they look for in a casino manager, specifically if the management course you mentioned is known to them and considered worthwhile. If you write to lots of casinos your bound to get a few good replys.

if you are going to do this, consider getting an MBA also.
and find out how many students in the program get placed in jobs.
seems like something that is either dying for people, or will have too many.
where do you want to live the rest of your life too?

Do you like working when people are on vacation and having fun?
If the answer is yes, than go for it.

plastics son, plastics.
chemical eng is always a good one.
I went the tech route, got a BS but it was tech and not eng. I regret it in a lot of ways. I am right now in my career where I would have been 14 years ago. on the plus side I have matured a ton and am much more ready for that career.
you would be surprised at the number of people that come out of college and move from home to a proffesional career and quit at the first chance to go back home to mommy and daddy and start over again.
when I started in my tech program the placement was 98% or so. then the first bush cutbacks hit. it dropped to about 20%. but when things picked up I got hired on quickly.
