Ive played poker now for about 4 months on and off (I work a full time job). Recently i have had some pretty bad beats due to experimenting and thinking i have found a table full of smaller fish. To my surprise generally I find myself a smaller fish compared to these ppl.
How long did it take you guys and gals to master the basics etc of Poker?
I know the basics I just struggle to recognise the signs that my opponants have better or worse cards than me.

When you get started, I suggest focusing on finding "your" game. When you feel ready, Google "online poker tells" and implement tricks you discover slowly and at your own risk.
