yo, wassup guys...
Im realllllllyyyyy considering moving over to NL50 HU in about 2 months, gonna work a bit more on my part time job to build up a roll for NL50...
but before i even attempt this, i want to completely change my mentality towards bad beats, variance etc...
I dont handle them that well ... for example..
Friday night £40 buy in private game/private leauge..
1 game a month, NL100 cash game afterwoulds,
4.5K chips (started with 2.5)
Villian (my mate who was drunk on red wine) 5k
blinds 75/150
preflop:
5 folds
Hero is CO: Qc 6c raises to 400
SB fold
BB call
Flop 5c 4c 8s
BB bets 725
Hero calls (flush draw mainly, Villan is drunk...)
Turn
7h
BB bets 1200
Hero raises all in
BB snap calls
turns over 84o for two pair 8s n 4s...
Hero turns over straight 4-8 with flush draw also
Villian says 'hahahah your outta here'
Hero replied 'Ive got a straight you donkey bitch'
Villian replied 'No you aint, your chasing'
Hero - puts his 6 inbetween the board and counted 4 5 6 7 8 to Villian who then goes 'OH FUCK'
RIVER
!!!!!! 8 !!!!!!!!!!!!
dirty dirty game...
anyways i fliped and chucked my family size pack of doritos at him (doritos are like chips in USA. english call them crisps) - like your 'Lays'
anyways yeah reccomened any books or anything on mind fram, mentality etc on Bad beats and the variance as obviously HU could be sick

Ugh, you're really going to try to play HU? You're a crazy one! But if you ever encounter yaawn, please run away for your own good.
Did you ever consider playing HU sng's?
Also, cut back on the chips imo, poker is already bad enough for your heart.

You just have to think, variance swings both ways. It always kind of equalizes itself in the end which is what you have to keep in mind. Sure, its pretty nasty short term, but give it some time and it will even itself out. Everyone hates the "fill in the blank" on the river.

Here's four books that might (should) help...The Tao Of Poker and Zen And The Art Of Poker by Larry W. Phillips. Also check out Poker Winners Are Different and Your Best Poker Friend by Alan Schoonmaker, PH.D. Tilt is a tough thing to manage. I played over 2000 hands online today on PokerStars and had a bad day...I can't count how many times my pocket aces and kings got destroyed preflop..I was set over setted a few times..a couple of full houses got burned down on the river by bigger ones..and 2 flopped ace high flushes blown up by rivered full houses not to mention all the other BS that went on. There was a time I would have had a melt down of titanic proportions..now don't get me wrong I was frustrated, pissed off and dejected but I was able just to stop playing and call it a day. The other thing that helps with that is playing at a stake level that is within your bankroll. I didn't go broke so tomorrow is another day. It ain't easy it takes time and effort but you can control it...good luck and just know variance is on your side only if you let it be. Tilt is the only thing that kills it.

I definitely like Schoonmaker and Larry Phillips, though I think Schoonmaker is more useful if going on tilt is a big problem for you, whereas Phillips can give you more emotional/psychological control if you are past that stage.
Another book that was instrumental to me personally in terms of establishing emotional control was The Poker Mindset by Matthew Hilger. It was pretty straightforward and not as in depth as Schoonmaker, but definitel helpful.
