Welfare needs to provide support for a limited time or until they can prove that they can survive on their own. School credits would be a good idea for people to get certifications/educations to work skilled higher paying jobs.
Why are you having kids that you cant pay for?

Av8tor you are extremely naive. You then wonder why every non-American country hates America.

Being a two-time PFO touranment champion, you'd think you'd be smarter than to make a post like that..

I don't think you should punish the parents, AND the kids for that. Even if someone has a family they can harldy/can't provide for, it doesn't make any sense to not give them the chance to get a real job so they have a chance to provide.

Because he was a Auto worker that got laid off as his job got moved out of the country, now considering 60% of the workforce in his town is now unemployed, he can't find a job, and hes got kids about to graduate from High School so he really can't move, family roots are too tight, So fro the next 9 months hes on unemployment/wellfare as hes lookign for a job, then as soon as he finds a gig at Mcdonalds for 5.50, they stop sending him his check that was the equivalent of his 25/hr job at the auto plant.

Thats why peopel are lazy, the system forces them to be. There is NO incentive for them to get a job, they are getting paid MORE to sit on the couch. IF we're a bunch of poker players looking at this from an EV POV, which is the better play? Doing nothing is. The system needs to be adjust so that it encourages Employment/education and slowly weens people off the support system.

Yada, yada, yada.

I'd like to hear from someone who lives in a big city on this who actually SEES people on welfare everyday and knows what welfare actually IS. After that, I'll give my thoughts.

I don't know if you're pro-life or not, but there are many pro-choice women that can't pay for children that decide to not abort. Accidents happen, no matter how smart you are. Young people drink. Not all do drugs, but one drunken night and one broken condom can change a woman's life. It's not as easy as we men like to think.

How easy are young girls under the influence, Beav? Come on, let's be honest here. In this thread, this isn't the issue, but it is under the umbrella, I'll admit.

I'm fairly middle of the road when it comes to the welfare state in the Uk.

You'd probably peg me as a communist though compared to the US situation, so I'll abstain

the answer is simple... the government of the United States is obligated to help the people of the United States.. if we cannot take care to make sure all of our citizens have the means to live, then we have no business using our resources helping 3rd world countries with their problems. remember the good old days when the US was an isolationist nation, and we never interfered with other countries? nobody hated us back then like they do now..
