It was sort of.. but consider this. If you ask anyone in Europe who MaryTyler Moore is.. they'ed almosty certainly know.
Sandra Day O`Connor is
only a career lawyer.... I'm pretty well informed and I couldn't place her.. In many respects Margaret Thatcher is probably a more significant political historical figure on a world scene and her electon was 'historic'. Despite being a 'republican' by instinct (not as you understand it politically) I would probably place the death of Lady Di as above the election of Thatcher.. Deaths are always historic.. Her funeral was watched by 2 billion people..
It's hard to put Iran-contra in a list like this when most Americans (and English ppl in fairness) probably couldn't point out where Iran is on a map...couldn't say the same about Vietnam..
If it's about world history you might really consider what followed on after the event.. what did it catalyse?
Playing devils advocate here.. you might consider things like the Beetles.. they probably had more impact on the world in the sixtees and successive decades, influenced more people and will be rememberd 200 years from now...........
