When I play poker I am gambling as much as someone who decides to run their own restaurant. Maybe Poker is like running your own business rather than being employed with a set monthly wage.

I always compared it to playing the stock market.

To say I never really loved the game is a stretch. I have a personality that once I am good at something I move on. Plain and simple I like challenges. For poker to continue to be a challenge I would need to be playing very high, and at that point the stress level was simply too high for me. Towards the end I was sitting regularly in 75/150 games and bigger PL and NL games, just to feel that adrenaline rush.
When you've got 50K sitting in a safe box at the casino losing $500 or a $1,000 in a night isn't a big deal.
Basically, to have that "love" for the game feeling I needed to be sitting in 50/100 or 75/150 limit game, or at a 5/10 PL/NL table. Playing 20/40 was just run of the mill, I couldn't do it 6-8 hours a day anymore. I was at the point where I had seen pretty much everything that these limits had to offer.
Right now, who knows what the future holds, it's just simpler for me to make similar (a little less) working a "real job". Stress is less, home life is better, and I can always go back to poker. It's harder to go from poker to a real job, than from a real job to poker.

Comparing poker to owning a business or playing the market is somewhat inaccurate.
Owning your own business means you rely on others to assist you -employees, workers, marketing, ads, consultants- poker is the most individual endeavor there is. There's no doubles poker, or partner games, you don't have a staff of 5 working for you. You're out to crush everyone. When you own a business you have to work with others and also have to enter some sort of partnership with other businesses.
As far as the market goes. When you invest you're competing against the house, not the other brokers. Who gives a shit if Jack, Ross, and Sue are making a killing or doing bad, you only care about your earnings compared to the house. Blackjack would be a more apt comparison. Since you don't care how the other people at your table are running, just how you're doing.

I know lots of people that run their own business from their home and have no employees.
