All I've heard about them is that they're studio magicians, and can barely play their own shit live. May be true, may be not.

Sounds half-true:
They can play crazy, but tuning is off, timing wavers, singer sucks

All the "real" metal kids ive met all have been super "my way or the highway" with music. But to answser your question I listen to a lot of different genres of music. From Stevie Wonder to Bob Dylan. I also listen to alot from the local music scene because I live in the bay area and we have a pretty actice muisc scene.

I'm not a massive Testament fan and no I don't listen to satyricon. As far as 80s thrash is concerned it's Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer FTW.
I listen to a fairly wide range and am open to all kinds of music but my favourites are Dream Theater, Opeth and Children of Bodom.

Bodom are cool but I hate the vocals.

It's about the music, not the vocals

Thrash metal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

By 1988 or so, the genre was quite saturated with new bands, but classic albums would still be recorded and released. Sepultura's third album, Beneath the Remains (1989) earned them some mainstream appeal as it appeared on Roadrunner records. Testament continued through the late 1980s with The New Order (1988) and Practice What You Preach (1989), both albums showing the band was continuing to grow musically and almost gaining Testament the same level of popularity as the "Big Four"[9][10][11][12] of thrash: Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer.

Those four have always been labelled as the "Big Four" of thrash metal, so grrr I'll fight u to the end

Hence the "Bodom are cool" part but I can't get past the screaming to listen to the music.
