I'm done
Well, all, it's been fun being a member of PFO, but it's time for me to give up poker. I've finally come to the conclusion that I suck. As everyone says, if you can't beat the donks at the lowest level, you can't beat anyone... Well, I guess that means I can't beat anyone.
I started playing poker over 2 years ago.. have read countless books... and have played what I thought was good poker. But I lost. I joined this forum to try to get better, but I'm still losing. All I can say is... I'm tired of being a loser and donating money.
Even the 8th place finish in that tournament over the weekend was a fluke. I just got insanely lucky.
Good luck everyone. You can continue to use the Stud HH converter that I wrote, however, in February, I'll be moving and will lose that internet account. If someone wants to copy it and host it on their website, go ahead.
Take care and good luck on the tables.

Play in a casino before you decide that. I find I am more succesful in a live game than online. Donks are your best friends in a casino.

I don't know. Sharkscope seems to have me pegged. I have that little fishbowl beside my name and a form of Super Tilt. I can't even remember being ITM in a SnG. Look me up for yourselves... Pokerstars name is ssgttwm.
As far as playing live, the closest place to play live is a 3 hour drive from here. I'd have to double up just to break even. I spent 4 months in DC last summer and went to Atlantic City twice. Let's just say that I couldn't beat those donks either.
I keep telling myself that it's just been bad luck, and that I am a good enough player to win, but it just hasn't happened. If I make a mistake, I lose. If I force the other players to make mistakes, I lose. I dread any flop that isn't rainbowed because I know these donks are drawing to a flush.
I really enjoy poker and don't want to quit, but it seems like the only +EV move I can make now.

Guess it depends how intensively you play (I became hooked quickly and within weeks and was playing 30+ hrs per week and reading books etc.) but if I wasn't a winning player within 1 year of starting Poker I would give up. In modern age of books, forums and internet multi-tabling it is possible to become a winning player within months if you have the time and dedication.

Keep playing, it took Howard Lederer two years to beat the low limits.

Not to make the original poster feel worse but I agree.
I've only been playing poker for a year and have been a winning player for at least the last 4-5 months. It just takes a LOT of dedication.

Yeah. Some people just get lucky in MTT's, but you never know. If that's something you can do, it's a cheap way to play for fun. When I'm not playing well or I'm too burnt out to play cash, but still in a mood to play for fun, the micro-SNG's and MTT's are great.
You sound burnt out, in general. So, you should definitely take a break until you feel differently. It could take a week. It could take a year, but if you chose to come back, you could just ease your way back in cheaply and slowly instead of diving head first. Poker isn't for everyone, and maybe it's just not for you. I know people who were losers for 5-6 years and are rolling heavy and playing professionally now. But it's a great game and with the internet and self-control, poker can be an extrememly cheap form of entertainment.

Triple T, sorry to hear you've had such a bad run with poker. I don't know how much you may have tried other games or not. Some people just do better at some forms of poker than others, tournament playing can be a tough grind for me. Actually I hate it, I believe Barry Greenstein said it best when he said basically "tournaments are lotteries with better odds". I got into poker like many others...watching the WPT/WSOP on tv and planned on being the next main event winner. Then after a few months I realized...I'm not much of a tournament player, and then realized I was doing better at LHE than NL in ring games. I just hate the fact that if you get unlucky against someone in a tournament you're done, in a ring game you just reload and the donk who busted you will give it all back usually anyway.
Maybe you haven't found your game yet, maybe you're pushing too hard to get even, maybe you're just running horrible, etc. Either way a break whether temporay or permanent is probably in order. Like Alex said if you get back into it, ease in slowly and cheaply and don't try to make a killing everytime you play. Best of luck.
