I'm actually going to be a Political Science major. Also, the terms right and left are used incorrectly. The political scale is actually an axis. Up and down refers to government power, and left and right refers to your economic beliefs. Check out: politicalcompass.org. Good site, take the test and you will see where you lie.

I am a Political Science major and there is no axis. "Axis" is childish terminology to form the image that you only have two choices.
The terms "left" and "right" are inaccurate as they only relate to how "big" a government is. Left is big. Right is small. It's more of a way to describe how much the state chooses to take and "redistribute," but now it is a civil term.
The parties in America are as follows from left to right
LEFT
Communist
Socialist
Green
Reform
CENTER (in alphabetical order)
Democratic
Republican
RIGHT
Libertarian
The political system or ideology farthist left is totalitarianism and on the right, it's anarchy.
Again, there is no tilt. For example, Rudy Guliani being pro gay marriage is not a "tilt" or "step" to the left. It is his stance and it is a right wing ideology that government should not enter our private lives.

I would say I am a socialist or possibly a facist. in my opinion most people are not responsible enough or intelligent enough to take care of themselves, i.e. retirement, healthcare. but I also feel the government should butt out of our private lives.
maybe alex can pinpoint my party affiliation
pro - state sponsered services
con - as i said above stay out of my private life

Alex, when I said "axis," I meant like an x/y axis, like a graph. It didn't mean there is two choices, rather 4 extremes, two on government control, and two on economic beliefs. Then, you could fall into a quadrant more or less. The political compass clearly shows that there are not two options. You are spot on in your explanation, though. Perfect example with Guliani.
Socialist, eh?

Like the 10s or thousands that died in government care during the heat wave in France last year, or all those that die while waiting for medical care?

I disagree, AT. There are many who want to lower economic involvement by our government and heighten social involvement. That's fine to believe, but in practice, these ideals of XY as axes are not practical as Democrats and Republicans show.
Economic Left/Right: 8.25
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian:-5.25
I was a little close to where they place Milton Friedman.
