If there is male oriented activities that are typical for showers in your family, that is one thing.

All I can judge by is the ones I have been through.

Regardless, if you are the one that will be disappointed, then why are you asking us?

The value of this thing is about $320, if you would rather be there, then by all means go. I have taken a full week off without pay to spend time with family. The money isnt anything to worry about long term.

I like to consider myself a "deprogrammed male" as well Beavis. My wife could not DRAG me to one of these things.

In my family if a guy shows up to a Baby Shower, he can look forward to getting the stinkeye from all of the ladies in attendance. It just doesnt happen. Everyone knows that men dont like these things. Seriously, what is there to like about watching your wife open up gifts of clothes for the child. Whoopy! I would rather do anything than sit through that.

Even so, Irexes is right in that if your family tradition and reasonable expectation is that the men attend the shower, especially you, I would say you should forego your tournament. Have Alex play since he has graciously offered to do so. In the end it sounds like it would be benificial to go to this thing. If you miss it and play the tourney, you may end up regretting it later on. There are a thousand tournaments, but this event doesnt come around all the time.

On both sides of my family, baby showers are for the whole family, not like bridal showers.

the point I was trying to make is that you shouldnt skip the MTT because it is only "poker"

If you would pass up a foundation job (or what ever else it is you are doing for money) for this, you should pass up the tournament.

If you would leave this early to go work and earn money for the home, you should play the tournament.

Are the other guys in your family expected to miss out on a work and pay for these events?

Of course, I am not the one that has to live with the conseqences. Value the event somewhere from 320-600$ and treat it accordingly. Including sub-contracting it out to Alex.
