Open Water is a low budget thriller about a young working couple trying to repair their troubled marriage from the damage caused by their over-worked lives by taking a scuba vacation.
The movie starts off very slowly (althought there is a little frontal nudity

, is filmed with hand held cameras, and is shot much like the late 70's In Search of Bigfoot type movies (it also had a feel similar to the 70's Nick Nolte movie The Deep). The beginning of the movie seems thrown together, and never captured my interest.
The bulk of the movie takes place in the water after the couple is left behind by their dive boat. The couple divide their time between arguing about their lives and dodging sharks. The scenes in the water with the sharks are done very well, and are very tense. It really looks and feels like they are right in the middle of the sharks isolated from all help. These are the best scenes in the movie, and there should have been more of them. In-fact, I was feeling pretty good about the movie up until the ending, which left too much open to question. After spending so much time watching these characters, I felt I deserved more from the end.
Rating 76s - worth seeing if you can get in cheap, but don't be surprised if you have a loser on the river.
