End the Pates controversy here; I've had enough
I might be overstepping my bounds here, but I'm kind of sick of all this debate over Pates.
Unlike many of the members here, I'm sorry that you were banned. This is a great website to discuss and learn about poker. I really enjoy being a member and PFO has provided me much entertainment and knowledge. I don't like seeing new members having a bad experience and missing out.
That said, like all the members here, I have the utmost respect and confidence in Marm. Marm has always been fair, open and respectful in his decisions, participation and management of the site. The decision to ban you was right, simply because Marm said so. If you can't bring yourself to believe that Marm is responsible and fair, then you shouldn't be posting on this site anyway.
Now, in part, what makes PFO so great is that it is a close knit community. We know each other pretty well - what games and stakes we play, personalities, abilities and experience. Regulars on this site are respected for their opinions. But nobody gets a free pass. Even regulars are often berated for bad plays and questionable analysis. However, this is (usually) done in a constructive way wihtout name calling, whining, or anger. Upon developing a report on this site, one can push these limits a little further. Why? Because they are known and respected on the site. Its the difference between a stfu from one of your buddies vs. from a stranger.
Alas, new members (such as yourself) don't need to get upset. It doesn't take a long time to establish yourself here. I have only been a regular poster since the beginning of the year. You just need to "play by the rules" and slowly develop a report with the rest of the site. You can this by:
1) respecting other members
2) offering posts that are intelligent, coherent and relevent
3) take criticism the right way (you can argue your points, but don't get whiney, defensive or nasty); or putting it another way: Lighten Up!
4) don't come on too strong (read: 20 posts in an hour); ease your way in; quality, not quantity
So, Pates, if you come back I hope you take some of my advices and end up making a positive contribution to PFO (and vice versa).
To everyone else, I hope you don't mind my little lecture. This Pates controversy has spread to too many threads. If you have something constructive to add to the issue, please feel free to post it here. Please refrain from flaming though (Pates or his minions) and let's try to squash all the Pates talk in the other threads as well. And Pates (and said minions), please refrain from arguing in all these different threads. As Marm already said, send him a PM stating your case and he might let you back.
