Hey computer guys!!
I thought I was a computer geek, but I'm having a problem that has me stumped. I've got a laptop that I use to connect wirelessly. All of a sudden, the wireless has stoped working. I used it fine Monday, and last night my wife was using it and said it let her onto the internet but when she clicked on another page she started getting a page not found error. Now when I look at the properties of the wireless connection it saying that the network did not (or could not) assign it a network address.
Anyone have any idea what this could be?

is the wireless card disabled? is your netword WEP or protected by some other encryption key?
My work laptop has a problem with the wireless card getting disabled.
my card at home loses the encryption key from time to time.

WEP in enabled, but the wireless connection is active and says it's connected with a strong signal.

Go into network connections, right-click on your wireless connection and select repair. Try the connection.
Are you on cable or DSL?

do you have other devices connecting to the web wirelessly?
I lot of times my system connects to the router, but the router doesn't allow web connection, so I have to reset everything.

That's what I was going to suggest, assuming he is on cable internet.
There's other things we can try as well but I need to get more info first.
(I actually do internet support for a living.)

No, I just have my laptop and my desktop. I've tried reseting the router, and I think I've rebooted the desktip as well.

My problems with wireless in my house related to other devices interfering with the signal like my wireless speakers. Have you got anything else that may be causing problems. When my roamabout telephones are in use they also cause difficulties. If you're getting a strong signal this is unlikely to be the cause but worth eliminating.

The desktop PC is online, right?
Assuming it is, log onto the desktop PC, go into the DOS prompt and type ipconfig/all.
-Get the IP address and the DNS address(es) and write them down.
-On the laptop/wireless PC, go into network connections, right-click on the wireless connection and select properties.
-In the window that appears, you should have a box that contains a couple of items with check marks beside them.
-One of those items should be something called "Internet Protocol TCP/IP." Click on it and click on the properties button below.
-On the screen that appears, you will see 2 different options. Write down the selections that are currently made in case you need set these back later.
-1st option: Select "specify an IP address" and enter in an address. Which address???
The address you enter in will be almost identical to the one you got from your other PC. The easiest thing to do is add 1 to the address that you got from the desktop. For example, if the desktop IP is 168.0.0.10 then the wireless address should be 168.0.0.11
- 2nd option: Select "specify a DNS address" and ENTER IN THE EXACT SAME ADDRESS(ES) THAT YOU GOT FROM THE DESKTOP PC....EXACT SAME.
-click OK and OK, close all windows down and restart your PC.
If it doesn't work or if you have any questions, let me know.
