Default Help me Computer Geeks!!!

I appeal to the more technically minded posters.

- My computer has slowed down a lot
- I am bombarded with pop ups offering me everything from Poker/Porn/Free Holidays
- My Computer occasionaly turns itself off spontaneously

I think I must have alot of adware/spyware things

What is the correct way to go about removing them/cleaning it up and properly protecting my computer?
I had the Norton Antivirus but it expired and I was too tight to spend the extra £40.

Any advice or recomended programs/websites?

do you have an image disc or the full os disc?

If you have an image disc, back everything up and reload it, start from scratch.

Get Zone Alarm right away. http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten...=en&lid=nav_za

You can stop stuff from phoning home with it. EVERYONE GET THIS FUCKING FREE PROGRAM EVEN IF YOU ARE ON DIAL UP.

Do a free pest patrol scan - google it.

That will tell you what you have an where. Also get spybot - google it.

You can try AVG free virus and see if that will clean you up.

Most likely you have a virus there.

Sounds like that is the result of spyware and adware on ur computer.

The safest and probably the smartest thing to do is to backup all ur needed files, then reformat ur computer.
Then download a firewall, Zone Alarm is pretty good.
Download Anti-virus software - AVG is good and its free, Avast is also not bad, If you have the money to invest in anti-virus software, then get Kaspersky which is probably one of the best. Make sure that when you download it, you scan ur computer at least once a week, otherwise its pretty much useless.

Download Ad-aware SE, and Spybot Search and Destroy - Both are very good programs for detecting and deleting spyware and adware. And whatever spyware one can't detect, the other will. Again make sure you scan ur computer for spyware/adware at least once a week.

Go get ZoneAlarms Firewall. I can't stress enough what beav said about it. It's Free, simple, and easy to use. And it's got a cool graphic.

For Spyware. Go take your Internet Explore over to Yahoo!. Download their Search.menu bar for IE. On it is Yahoo Anti-spy. You can now go under C:\program files\Yahoo! to find the Yspr.exe File and make that a shortcut on your desktop. This is an excellent spyware program from a reputable place with frequent updates.

Anti-virus. www.kapersky.com You can get a free 2 month trial of the full version. Run that and you should be set for a while.
