Default Green-backed Heron

This bird has been visiting our pond almost daily. He is eating the guppies and goldfish out of it. He caught one of our 1 year old fish that was about 5 inches long, so we added some shelter for the big fish.

we put the little goldfish and the guppies out for him. we have a ton of guppies. we keep them in the pond and the turtles watering hole in the summer to eat mosquitos.

As long as he doesn't kill anymore of the big goldfish, I am happy he is in the yard.

You would be surprised at the egrets, great blue herons, and even pelicans around here.

no, our backyard is about 20 feet by 80ft

most is rock, and we didnt plant winter grass this year. That is the best part of the yard right there.

well, one year later:

I get up this morning and my youngest was sitting in the chair looking out the window. I look at side and there is a 3ft+ tall Great Blue Heron standing on the rock on the right side of the picture plucking a 3in goldfish out of the pond. She said that was the third one it had gotten.

I tried to take a picture but it jumped up on the fence and eventually flew off.

Why don't you capture it and take it the zoo or a wild life preserve?

I remember as a child we did that for a squirrel that fell out of a tree. Not quite similar but they'll take it. It's real pretty anyway.
