Even if it was a steal, I think you need to have SOMETHING to back up your defense. If you are going to make a play like that pre-flop, then rearaise and try to take the pot right there.

That's bad thinking. It doesn't matter if you'd contributed to the pot or not. That money is no longer yours and you can't look at it as if it is.
