Default STTs - More luck?

This might be a silly question, but do STTs inherently involve more luck than large MTTs? If to, do what extent would you guys loosen up in response?

Less chips, plus obviously less people at the table as the tournament progresses give you less chance to hit some hands.

I ask because I'm only approx breaking even at STTs. I'm finding that they either go one of two ways:

- I either take a big pot at the start of the tournament which gives me time to be picky about my battles. I'll rarely lose a tournament with an early double up.

- I get a few playable hands, try the standard pre-flop raise, miss the flop and have to throw it away to a few bets. I end up low stacked and as the blinds come up, I have start playing sub-premium hands and soon wipe out.

I'm doing much better at MTTs as before any skill comes into it, they simply give me a chance to only play +EV hands. Think I'll stick with them but wondered what you thought and which kind of tournies you guys usually play?

Thx!
