Review: Making the Final Table
Making the Final Table by Erick Lindgren is part of the WPT Champions of Poker series of books.
The book is fairly short, with only about 126 pages devoted to tourney strategy. Erick's book is unique in that it is the first book I have read from a loose-aggressive player. Erick has no set range of starting hands, and will open raise from any position with an assortment of hands.
The book contains general guidelines for aggressive play. There is no real hand analysis.
An interesting thing about Erick's play: he likes to vary his bet size by position, gradually increasing the size as position improves. This is the opposite of what most books suggest.
Erick also discusses checking for information (something I have refered to several times in the past). Erick also states that check-calling is one of the most underrated weapons in the poker arsenal - and here I agree also.
Making the Final Table contains tips and strategies to cover play from the first hand of the tournament to the last heads-up hand - where you win and Mike Sexton hands you a Michellob Amber Bock.
While I don't feel that his loose, small-ball approach will work too well in the cheap online tourneys (although I have only tried it in a few games so far). This is a good book that will help keep MTT players in the correct mindset and will add few tricks to your bag.
8 out 10.
