To add to this, it is better to attempt this if you raised pre-flop.
for example you have AK and there is a limper from EP, you raise and another player calls. The flop is J55 the first guy checks. assume both players are OK.
the first guy checked so it is likely he has nothing, the player behind you flat called a raise which in my experience is a pair of tens or lower or AQ type hand so he most likely missed to.
