actually Harrington recommends that he limp witht his hand pre-flop....AJ is not as strong as we all think. with no raisers out there and a possible flush/straight he needs to make a lead bet that does not give pot odds to someone chasing a draw. with 140 in pot and about 6 people left to bet you cannot make a small bet here.
Lets check it out
A bet of 50 makes it 50 to win 190..thats almost 4 to 1.....if he calls everyone else downstream is getting GREAT pot odds to see another card if they are on the draw.
A bet of 100 makes it 100 to win 240......not such great odds. Someone who also has top pair is making this call and the next person on a draw, who i am afraid of here, is getting 100 to win 340...still not good pot odds.
I think the bet needs to be at least 100. If you don't want to take a chance on someone taking the marginal odds then you need to make a larger bet say in the 150 to 200 range.
The only possible drawback to this large bet strategy is that you chase everyone out of the pot except the person who has you beat.....AA or JJ, kind of expensive. Then again, they would probably call you down and slowplay anything you bet so you would be destined to lose a lot of chips against them anyway. Since they didn't raise pre-flop I doubt they are out there.
I like the $100 bet here....chases out the draws and lets you know what you are up against pretty cheaply. If you get called, you are making another good bet at the pot against someone who is probably holding A-X.
