Default Raising pre flop or seeing it for cheap?

There is such a balance to this game and being deceptive. For example, I like to keep my pre flop raises between 3-5 BB's whether I have A,J s, 10,10 or A,A, etc. Odds are your not going to hit most flops so once in a while I like to just call with anyone of these hands to change it up. Either way there is a problem with this. Your the raiser with anyone of these hands pre flop and either one, you don't connect or two, the flop is rags. This can be bad even if you narrowed the field with the raise but on the other hand if you didn't raise or there wasn't a raise pre flop then at least you saw the flop for less. Of course there might be more people in the hand now. If it was raised before you then you might just smooth call it where if you don't connect on the flop you have more to work with. Is there any golden rule if you have position and a good hand pre flop where you should always raise all the time?

Thanks
