It's variance. And by playing so many hands more online than you do live, you will even out the variance quicker and so your bottom line winrate/loserate will become apparent sooner. This is why so many "bad" players will say they win easily live but do terrible online, it's cos they haven't played enough hands live to even out the variance and truly compare to online play.

The micros online are not difficult to beat, if you play simple ABC poker with decent understandings of the fundamentals you can beat 100nl (I haven't played enough at higher levels to comment). Table selection is also more important online as you have the option of switching whenever you feel like it. There's no excuse to be sat next to 3 TAG grinders at nl10 when loads of tables are full of fish.

It's very simple, if you play your A game and can't beat the micros, you don't stand a chance at higher levels.

I recommend Cardrunners for superb poker coaching. It was honestly the single biggest improvement in my game signing up there! Sign-up fee might seem steep, but it pays itself back within weeks.
