if this is gonna be ur first poker book, i think id recommend Small Stakes Hold Em by David Sklansky.

its written as a guide to beating small stakes limit holdem but it explains the basics of the game well (hand selection, value of position, hand strength etc) and will therefore be very useful even if u decide that ur going to play no limit.

another good book is Harrington on Hold Em by Dan Harrington (Vol I is a basic tournament strategy book; Vol II goes more into specific detail and deals with later stages of a tournament; Vol III is a "quiz" type book testing u on ur knowledge). this one is geared towards tournament poker and is an excellent book to read if this is the road ur going to go down.
thanks, i just bought it.

and since i have you, and you are a mod, can you maybe direct me to some good places to go on this forum such as important stickies/threads? Any help would be appreciated to get me started!
