TAG=Tight Aggressive

This means you don't play a lot of hands, but when you do play a hand, you play it hard and fast. Betting/raising, etc.

There is also

LAG=Loose Aggressive

This type of player is in the pot frequently with a wide range of hands, making him difficult to read at times.

Typically starting out for NL games, check out the Harrington on Hold Em series of books. It really helps you develop a strong understanding of the TAG approach. From there, experience and time @ the tables will help you develop a LAG approach as well.

The best players do not adhere to one specific style, they can mix it up and "change gears", as they say. Sometimes your table conditions call for one style of play over another.
