I think tipping is much more "expected" in the US than in the UK. I don't know whether it's to do with wages or just the culture but to me a tip should be a reward for doing a good job.

I've only been to the US a couple of times but always had excellent service, imo they deserved the tip. Maybe I was just lucky then but half the places in the UK are the complete opposite.
