Yes, you are behind 88 or 9T. But he could have KT or Qx. Your bet does not necessarily show strength as you could just be stabbing at the pot. I would reraise him on the flop (to $5, I guess) to really find out where you are at. This probably costs you less than calling his flop raise and moving forward on the turn. If he raises you again after your flop reraise, you can more comfortably let it go.
