I think if he had the str8 or flush he would bet out here on the river, so that he doesn't lose a bet if you check. I think I like betting this river.

I totally agree with Marm except that I can also see A7s in the mix. He may have hit second pair and decided to check and see what you do. When you didnt bet and a harmless looking eight came on the turn, he tried to bet and take the pot there. When you raised he maybe thought a bluff, and called hoping for an A or 7 on the river. When it didnt come he checked so as not to lose anymore money. Just a guess.
